Marlon Rubio Smith is a Mexican-American director, cinematographer, and producer with a focus on stories that explore belonging, cultural identity, and the emotional terrain of immigration. Born and raised in Mexico City, Marlon moved to the U.S. at age13, an experience that continues to shape the emotional core of his storytelling. His short film I’m New (2023), which explores the immigrant experience is currently streaming on Prevo, and his latest short ¿Cuándo Perdí Mi Cabeza? is touring film festivals.
A director at heart, Marlon also thrives behind the camera as a cinematographer. He served as director of photography on over 25 projects, always aiming to create images that move with intention and emotion. He’s equally at home as a 1st or 2nd AC, bringing care and collaboration to every set.
Through his production company, MXR Films, Marlon has produced a wide range of work, from the $10K fan film The Ultimate Spider-Man (300K+ views on YouTube), to La Bendición, a tender portrait of love and tradition directed by Brandy Frausto.
Marlon graduated with a B.S. in Radio-Television-Film from UT Austin, and is currently developing projects that use movement, memory, and music to expand how we tell stories about identity. Let’s connect!
