Marlon Rubio Smith is a Mexican-American filmmaker with ample experience in directing, cinematography, and producing. Born and raised in Mexico City, Marlon came to the United States at age 13, making this one of the most influential life events to this day. It was while watching Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy in his childhood when he fell in love with cinema. His experiences as an immigrant have greatly influenced his directing work, such as the award-winning short I’m New (2023) streaming on Prevo, and the upcoming short ¿Cuándo Perdí Mi Cabeza?, currently in film festivals. Marlon is interested in sharing stories revolving sense of belonging, cultural identity, and existential questions of life.
Marlon’s second love right behind directing is cinematography. During his four years of film school, he was the director of photography of over 25 projects and counting. Marlon’s approach to cinematography lies in creating images that evoke a feeling and serve the story while honoring the director's vision. If not shooting, you will find Marlon in camera department either as a first or second assistant camera.
Lastly, Marlon has a production company called MXR Films, under which he does his producing work and houses all of his narrative work. Marlon has produced a diverse set of projects, including the $10K budget fan film, The Ultimate Spider-Man directed by Xavier Ingram, with over 300K views on YouTube, or the heart-touching story of La Bendición, directed by Brandy Frausto.
Recently having graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Science in Radio-Television-Film (RTF), Marlon is eager to bring authentic stories to life in whatever capacity seems fit. Contact for any business inquiry, collaboration, or just to say hi!
